Dealing with Slavery in the Bible

Does the Bible advocate slavery and the objectification of others?

Event date: 7/26/2017 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Export event

  Tonight, by Steve Schlichter
Slavery is repugnant to most people, as well it should be. It has been practiced throughout the ages by all peoples, and even today. Why does God allow it, even in the Bible (and the Qur'an)? That's what this talk will be about.

If you are a Christian, have you ever been confronted with a passage from the Old Testament that is difficult to deal with? For example, passages that appear to condone violence or slavery. When discussing issues like morality and history, I find that atheists and Muslims are prepared to offer up certain Old Testament passages to demonstrate that the Bible is a flawed book and Christians are not always equipped to deal with them.

Physical location: 149 W Liberty St., Plymouth, 2nd floor

*This talk will be live-streamed in several Facebook locations such as our Tao and Tawheed page. The video will posted in our Youtube and our blog channel tomorrow.

#3 of or "Deep Dive" lecture series.

For example, a popular atheist blogger says the following:

How prepared are you to deal with this statement? What is the Christian's relationship to the Old Testament?

Some Christians ignore the issue altogether? Others might feel that we should focus on the "red-letters" of Jesus alone. Of course, there are problems with this approach if others focus on the Old Testament. Some Pastors ignore the issue as well. When was the last time you heard a sermon from Leviticus?

Still others think the Old Testament is still in effect for us today and want it implemented in modern society? This approach is also fraught with moral hazards. In this seminar, we will discuss the Christians relationship to the Old Testament and then apply that principle to an examination of slavery and servitude in the Old Testament.
